The two series in this collection are based on how the material was acquired; the first being original materials by Beardsley, and the second representing Beardsley materials collected by Dr. A.G.M. Severn. The bulk of the Beardsley collection is correspondence between Dr. Severn and R.A. Walker, a student of Beardsley, who initially wrote about Beardsley under the pseudonym of Georges Derry. The Beardsley series consists of correspondence (1893-98), from Beardsley to T. Dove Keighley (1893), David Nutt (1893), Leonard Smithers (1895-97), and Andre Raffalovich (1895-98). The bulk of the letters to Raffalovich includes 165 items that have been published in "The letters of Aubrey Beardsley," edited by Maas, Duncan, and Good (1970). Beardsley discusses his works, health, conversion to Catholicism, appreciation for the books and financial assistance from Raffalovich, works by others (including Havelock Ellis, Marguerite Eymery, George Sand, and Sarah Bernhardt) as well as personal information about his family and life. The second series includes correspondence and miscellaneous materials. The correspondence (1908-59) consists of letters to Severn and third party correspondence. Correspondents include Lilian Dash (1946-52), Albert Gallatin (1944), Richard Haworth (1943), Enid Lambart (1952), and Percy Muir (1944), all of whom discuss various aspects of Beardsley and his works. The bulk of the correspondence, about 250 letters, are from R.A. Walker to Severn dating from 1943-59. Many of the letters from Walker were removed from books that were acquired with this collection. The HRHRC Art and Photography Collections also contain Beardsley materials.
